Kampos - Chios

Campos is a unique area, full of orchards, in the centre of Chios. The properties are made up of a housing unit and a, usually, large orchard, all enclosed by high stone walls in a impressive maze of small and narrow roads.

The area was developed initially as a suburban area to the castle by the Genoas in the 14th century. At this time, citrus fruits were first appeared in the island. The historical events such as the massacre in 1822, the frost in 1850 and the catastrophic earthquake in 1881 affected the social and architectural identity of Campos, which had always been the place where important and well off families of Chios lived.

Today, Campos is nominated as an “Historical place” by the Greek Ministry Of Culture and remains an area with important cultural value.
